PALACE OF THE PRIORS

Ideally positioned opposite the religious complex of the cathedral, the palace, founded in Gothic style at the end of the 13th century and expanded between 1334 and 1347, stands on the side of Piazza del Popolo, facing the Duomo. The Priori delle Arti, who governed Todi from 1321, numbered ten, each serving a two-month term, during which they were required to remain within their headquarters. The palace, whose original façade on the square was about half of its current size, was built in a short time but was soon expanded to cover the entire city block, incorporating nearby houses, such as the one belonging to Lucio di Guerriscio degli Oddi (the last house on the right of the block). The Priori moved in in 1340, but they only stayed there until 1368, when the city came under the control of the Church. The palace then became the headquarters of the papal governors and apostolic vicars. Today, it houses the courthouse and some administrative offices. The façade features two rows of windows built in 1513 in a Renaissance style, with round arches and a bronze (from 1339) depicting the eagle of Todi, created by Giovanni di Gigliaccio. The majestic trapezoidal tower, originally taller and crenellated, was constructed between 1367 and 1385 and was for a long time connected by a walkway to the Palazzo del Popolo. Recently restored, it is now home to a contemporary art museum and offers a splendid panoramic observation point.
